In treating women simply as an „underrepresented group,” its proponents seek to ensure that a few privileged souls can attain positions and pay on a par with the men of their own class. Rather than seeking to abolish social hierarchy, it aims to „diversify” it, „empowering” "talented" women to rise to the top.

Its real aim is not equality, but meritocracy. Centered in the global North among the professional-managerial stratum, it is focused on „leaning-in” and „cracking the glass ceiling.” Dedicated to enabling a smattering of privileged women to climb the corporate ladder and the ranks of the military, it propounds a market-centered view of equality that dovetails perfectly with the prevailing corporate enthusiasm for „diversity.” Although it condemns „discrimination” and advocates „freedom of choice,” liberal feminism steadfastly refuses to address the socioeconomic constraints that make freedom and empowerment impossible for the large majoritiy of women. But far from providing the solution, liberal feminism is part of the problem. In this episode, we explore what kind of feminism could not only lead us beyond this present crisis, but also offer us a vision of a more just world where equality and liberation are premises, not aspirations: a feminism for the 99%.The mainstream media continues to equate feminism, as such, with liberal feminism. And in this space, some are asking what a feminst response to COVID could look like?īut, of course, there are multiple kinds of feminism. But where there is a crisis, there is also opportunity. So many of the jobs lost during the pandemic were held by women, that the resulting economic recession has been called a “she­cession” - or even an example of “disaster patriarchy.”īut our current economic system has always had a history of harming women disproportionately - in fact, in many ways, COVID has simply revealed and exacerbated already existing inequalities.

The pandemic has simultaneously increased the demand for unpaid labor from women, including childcare and homeschooling, while decimating industries like retail, leisure, hospitality, education and entertainment which are their main employers.
